Mu Daiko Welcomes New Artistic Director Jennifer Weir

Jennifer Weir has been with Mu Daiko since its beginning and is excited to officially take over the reins for the next chapter. She looks forward to forging ahead to new taiko adventures with a "fighting!" spirit. She knows she has big "tabi" to fill and is honored by opportunity to build on the artistry and accomplishments of former Artistic Directors Rick Shiomi and Iris Shiraishi.

Mu Daiko also welcomes two new members to its roster, Emma Valentine and Arlene Teraoka. Both started out as Mu Daiko Interns and are now full-fledged members. Congratulations!

Arlene Teraoka grew up in Papaikou, Hawaii, hearing and loving the sound of taiko at obon festivals in the summer. Decades later, in 2011, she fulfilled a childhood dream when she enrolled in an intro taiko class with Iris Shiraishi. Her life since then has been a journey of joy, discovery, and connection. Arlene wants to continue practicing and learning as much as she can, for as long as she can. She is thrilled beyond words to play as a member of Mu Daiko.

Emma Valentine met Rick Shiomi her freshman year of college in 2007 and her life was forever changed. In 2008 she was stage managing a taiko show and was so blown away by the sounds, energy and movement that she had to try it. For Emma, it has been such a privilege to grow up around and be taught by such a variety of wonderful artists and a dream to perform along side the members of Mu Daiko. She couldn't be happier or more grateful to be welcomed as a new member to the group and is excited to keep learning in this new chapter of life.

Emma also traveled to Japan recently and performed the song "Daichi" with visiting guest sensei and workshop leader Yuichi Kimura. Click on the image below to watch a video of the performance.

Last but not least, the 2015 Taiko Lab is right around the corner! It's a great opportunity to experience original compositions, experimental melodies, and brand new rhythms from the innovative composers/ensemble members of Mu Daiko. Visit our website for tickets and more info.
