L.A.-based theatre-producing collective Artists at Play, with support from the Network for Asian American Theatre Professionals – L.A. / So Cal, COLD TOFU Improv and Tuesday Night Project, will host a public town hall meeting to learn more about the “51% Preparedness Plan for the American Theatre.” As proposed by Tim Dang, Producing Artistic Director of East West Players, the Plan challenges the field of theatre nationwide to keep pace with America’s rapid demographic changes. This proposal challenges major theatre organizations to aim for the goals of their artists and production personnel to be 51% people of color, 51% women and 51% hires under 35 in preparation of future leadership when the U.S. will be majority minority by the year 2042.
This open forum will help present and discuss the Plan, as well as address any responses, concerns and criticisms from the arts community. Leslie Ishii, EWP Diversity Liaison, will also be in attendance to report on what is happening in the national field of theatre at large. This event aims to provide context for the Plan and discuss ways in which theatremakers and theatregoers can stay informed and empowered.
