Asian American theatre artists in the Seattle area made their presence felt in the nominations for this year’s Gregory Awards, which celebrate excellence in the theatre and are presented by Theatre Puget Sound, the area’s pre-eminent organization embracing theatres large and small in the Seattle area.
Nominations came in at all area, from acting to design to writing and include
- Desdemona Chiang, for Direction of Constellations (Seattle Repertory Theatre); she is a two time Gregory winner in Direction for her work for Measure for Measure (Seattle Shakespeare) and Jesus Hopped the A Train (Azeotrope, where she is co-Artistic Director);
- Ray Tagavilla, for Outstanding Actor (Play), The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (Sound Theatre); he is a two time winner of a Gregory for Outstanding Supporting Actor (Play), for A Small Fire (Sound Theatre) and Jesus Hopped the A Train (Azeotrope);
- Don Nguyen, for Outstanding New Play, Sound (Azeotrope);
- Pork Filled Productions
Maggie Lee, for Outstanding New Play, The Tumbleweed Zephyr (Pork Filled Productions, where she is also Artistic Director),
Jocelyn Fowler, for Outstanding Costume Design, A Hand of Talons; - Justin Huertas, along with Rob Witmer, Outstanding Sound/Music Design, Romeo and Juliet (Seattle Shakespeare), Justin was recipient of Outstanding Actor in a Musical and Outstanding New Play, both Lizard Boy at Seattle Repertory Theatre.
The Gregory Awards will be announced at McCaw Hall, in Seattle, Monday, October 24.
