Henry Ong’s adaptation of Tirso de Molina’s Jealous of Herself opens on Sunday, June 24, 7:00 pm
WHAT The world-premiere of “The Blade of Jealousy,” Henry Ong’s modern-day adaptation of Spanish Renaissance Playwright Tirso de Molina’s madcap comedy “La Celosa De Si Misma” (Jealous of Herself).
SYNOPSIS: Dashing Melchor moves to Los Angeles to court his online dating connection but unexpectedly falls in love with a mysterious veiled lady (Magdalena), and she with him. He later meets her sans veil but is unimpressed, thus igniting Magdalena’s jealousy – of herself! A farcical amalgam of disguise and deception ensues.
WHY Originally commissioned by Playwrights’ Arena (PA) for the Golden Tongues series, a PA-partnership with UCLA William Andrews Clark Memorial Library, which aims to introduce audiences to the treasures of the Golden Age of Spanish theater.
WHO Adapted by Internationally Produced Los Angeles Playwright Henry Ong (Madame Mao’s Memories; Sweet Karma; Fabric; Ascent) from Tirso De Molina’s “La Celosa De Si Misma” – originally translated in English by Harley Erdman.
