Artists At Play’s Statement
I think this has considerable weight; as producers specializing in works featuring actors of color, Artists At Play is absolutely right that the effect on companies such as theirs should be considered. As a producer myself, I would find these proposed strictures daunting for future work. And the effect on the development of actors of color cannot be dismissed. Expecting existing theatres to step up to the plate in the new landscape would seem a bit overly optimistic. After all, even in a town like Seattle, with a large Asian American population, even a luminary like David Henry Hwang has quite a few of his works still awaiting a Seattle premiere (despite my best efforts). And let’s not talk about Julia Cho (the writer) and the many other Asian American playwrights who do not get produced outside of ethnic houses.
