Pan Asian NuWorks 2019
Lost Chinatowns is a solo dance-theater work that explores the destruction, lost vibrancy, and historical erasure of Santa Cruz’s Chinatowns from 1860-1955. Santa Cruz, now known for being the ultra-liberal “leftmost” city of the US, was once a center for virulently xenophobic anti-Chinese racism in California. The piece aims to make connections between the historical othering of Asian bodies and current racialized xenophobia in the era of Trump.
The Art of Fly Swatting is a poetic memory play about a young Japanese-American’s journey through his early defining ruptures. Utilizing spoken-word poetry and calligraphy, Ken endeavors to heal the wounds from the separation of his parents, the distance of his father, and a subsequent relationship with an enigmatic mentor. The play journeys through a variety of subjects including language, D&D, and the little things that return a person to their own power.
