AATC Fall 2000 Training

DIRECTING INTESIVE with Ellen Sebastian Chang
All lives are founded and organized on basic principals of survival, problem solving and this class is designed to help each artist explore his/her highest level of creativity as a beginning director. Each artist should bring to class a script or treatment (written idea) that will be used to learn the basics of directing: analysis, casting, design and creating / finding your directorial voice.

Ellen Sebastian Chang was co-founder and artistic director of LIFE ON THE WATER, at San Francisco's Fort Mason Center (1986-1995), a directing and producing consultant with the Zellerbach Family Fund. Ms. Chang is a playwright in residency at the S!chool for the Arts and Castlemont High School (part of Magic Theater&Mac226;s program). She has collaborated, directed and consulted with performers Awela Makeba, Holly Hughes, Whoopi Goldberg, Anne Galjour, Leonard Pitt, Sean San Jose, Charlie Varron, Latina Theater Lab, 18 Mighty Mountain Warriors, AATC and Culture Clash.

ACTING with Rena Owen (UPCOMING TBD in October/November 2000)
This workshop is not only of benefit to Actors, but also Writers and Directors. This workshop explores the journey, from scripts while understanding the differences between acting on Stage, and acting in front of the Camera. This workshop looks at script and scene breakdowns, and developing your character from the blueprint of your vehicle.

Owen is one of New Zealand's most successful actors. Her performance as Beth in "Once Were Warriors" earned her many industry awards. She has worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company, starred in numerous television productions, both at home and abroad. Other film credits include "What Becomes of The Broken Hearted", "Dance Me To My Song",and "Rapa Nui", produced by Kevin Costner.

POLYNESIAN WRITERS PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP
Presented by Asian American Theatre Company and UTOPIA
Sponsored by California Arts Council Artist Residency Program, Horizons Foundation, LEF Foundation and Oakland Asian Culture Center. A Continuing Writing and Performance workshop for Polynesian and Pacific Islander writers and performers facilitated by Dan Taulapapa McMullin, Playwright-in-Residence with AATC. Workshop participants will engage in theater and improv exercises, readings, writing exercises and performance exercises.. Dan has performed and taught in New York, Boston, the MidWest, California, Hawaii, Fiji, Samoa and Aotearoa-New Zealand. Workshops culminate in several public performances of participants' work at end of Oct. and end of Nov.., including works by John Kneubuhl, Dan Taulapapa McMullin and other Polynesian playwrights.
