AATC Presents Refrigerators

Asian American Theater Company presents a reading of REFRIGERATORS, by Judy Soo Hoo. The reading is directed by Esperanza Catubig, and features Mario Alvarado, Noel Benoza, Rhoda Gravador, Victor Kao, Genevieve Lee, Marie K. Lee, John Lew, Kristen Lui, Naomi Quinones, and Pearl Wong. The reading will be held Saturday, Oct. 30th, 7:30 p.m., at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California, 1840 Sutter Street, between Webster and Buchanan in the Japantown neighborhood of San Francisco.

In REFRIGERATORS, Judy Soo Hoo, takes you to the hottest day in December. What can three Asian American women desire the most in such a smoldering day? The perfect refrigerator! This play is a story about food, love, relationships and the messy secrets that lie beyond the butter dish.

Judy Soo Hoo is a playwright residing in Southern California. Her play TEXAS was produced this October 1999 by SHP/Lodestone Theatre Ensemble in Los Angeles and was the winner of the 1999 Yukon New Play Award. REFRIGERATORS is one of the recipients of the AT&T/East West Players New Voices Playwriting Award. Excerpts have been published in the Asian Pacific Journal, edited by David Henry Hwang and in "Best Stage Scenes, 1997." She is honored to be part of AATC's programming.

Asian American Theater Company was founded in 1973 as a playwrights' workshop sponsored by the American Conservatory Theater. The company is dedicated to the production of New American plays by dramatists of Asian Pacific Islander descent. Throughout its history, AATC has served as a home for numerous Asian Pacific Islander American playwrights, directors, actors and designers, including Frank Chin, Margaret Cho, Dennis Dun, David Henry Hwang, Philip Kan Gotanda, Amy Hill, Momoko Iko, R.A. Shiomi, Wakako Yamauchi and Judi Nihei. After more than a quarter of a century of pioneering Asian American theater arts, AATC is poised to chart new directions for Asian Pacific Islander American theater arts into the new millennium.
