AATC presents The Butcher's Burden
San Francisco's Asian American Theater Company presents the second reading of his play by company member, Harold Byun (of the Asian American comedy troupe 18 Mighty Mountain Warriors) entitled "The Butcher's Burden." Byun has film and television credits to his name as well as being one of 18 Mighty's key skit writers. A script-in-hand reading was done by the same cast last January of 1998. "The Butcher's Burden" was developed during the Asian American Theater Company's six-week-long Playwrighting Class in December of 1997 taught by playwright Jeannie Barroga. Byun's "The Butcher's Burden" tells the darkly comic story of Ray, a young Korean American, hired by a private investigation firm to research a class of "untouchables". The "untouchables" were butchers, whose history is only lightly touched upon in Korean history, and who went into hiding. The appearance of their spirits helps Ray discover a tale of betrayal, condemnation, and his own quest for self-redemption. Comments from the audience may follow this reading. Actors participating in this script-in-hand, minimally-rehearsed reading of "The Butcher's Burden" are: Mitzie Abe, Noel Benoza, Karen Lee, Lane Nishikawa, Naomi Quinones, and Greg Watanabe.
