The UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance seeks applicants for its annual fellowship programs.

Program Duration: July - August, 1999

Deadline : The Complete Application Packet must be postmarked by December 1, 1998

The Center for Intercultural Performance (CIP) invites performing artists, writers and scholars from the United States and Asia to participate in the Asia Pacific Performance Exchange (APPEX) Program.

This is an intensive residency program to be held on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles in the summer of 1999. Consisting of two components, the APPEX Artists Fellowship Program and the APPEX Writers Fellowship Program, the joint residency places artists, writers and scholars in an interactive six-week program, providing them with a rich cross-cultural and interdisciplinary working environment. Artists will develop rigorous strategies for art-making that reflect the nuances of cultural differences; and foster meaningful ways to experiment, collaborate, and interpret artistic expression. Writers will develop their own strategies of observing, interacting, interpreting and finally writing about the activities of the artists.

APPEX Writers Fellowship Program Duration of Workshop: July 1 - August 14, 1999

UCLA's Center for Intercultural Performance invites writers from the United States and Asia to consider "intercultural performance" as an aesthetic, social and political response to the shifting cultural and political landscapes of America and Asia. The theme, "Cross-cultural Collaboration - Examining Creativity in a Performance World" draws its subject matter directly from the activities of the artist workshops.

Four Fellows will be selected - two from Asia and two from the United States. Recognizing the value of independent scholarship and the multiplicity of approaches found in Asia and America, applicants may be scholars, teachers, researchers, writers, journalists, and culture/arts advocates. We seek applicants with expertise in diverse fields such as cultural studies, dance ethnology, ethnomusicology, history, and theater. Travel expenses, housing, meals, and a modest stipend will be provided for each Fellow.
