Azeotrope wins four Gregory Awards

Azeotrope, one of Seattle's many Asian American led theaters, was a major winner at the 2012 Gregory Awards last night, sponsored by Theatre Puget Sound and given out each year to honor achievement in theatrical productions in Washington's Puget Sound area.

Led by Richard Nguyen Sloniker and Serin Ngai, Azeotrope nabbed four awards, including one for Outstanding Production for Azeotrope's presentation of Jesus Hopped the A Train by Stephen Adly Guirgis. Other awards for Jesus, which is just the second for the company, went to director Desdemona Chiang for Outstanding Direction, Ray Tagavilla for Outstanding Supporting Actor and Deanna Zibello for Outstanding Scenic Design. (Other nominees for Azeotrope included Richard Sloniker for Outstanding Actor, Angela DiMarco for Outstanding Supporting Actress, Kimberley Newton for Outstanding Costume Design and Jessica Trundy for Outstanding Lighting Design).

Competition for Gregory Awards was stiff, as large, Equity houses such as ACT and Seattle Rep competed on an even basis with much smaller troupes such as Azeotrope. But the wins for Azeotrope were warmly received by the capacity crowd attending the event at Seattle's ACT stage.

Azeotrope is a small theatre based in Seattle, "creating a space where audiences confront the marginalized and obscured, bringing visibility to the invisible. " The company's website is at www.azotheatre.org.
