WOMEN: (2)

DELLA: African-American, late-30's. Dramatizes her letters from Oregon to her much older husband, Linc deployed in Philippines. Pregnant mother of two, college-educated school teacher, determined to save her family. Keen insight and deduction. Balances sensuality, loneliness and pioneer strength.

LUISA: Filipina, mid-20's. Rebel General; twice widowed; former servant impersonating her Lady; strong yet guarded, feminine, wily, witty. Riled by class distinctions. Delivers like a velvet whip. Must move well.

MEN: (7)

PORFIRIO: Filipino, late-20's. Nalding's older brother. Aristocrat. General and rebel leader. European-educated, proud, impassioned yet conflicted. Commanding, accessible presence. In love with Luisa. Must move well

NALDING: Filipino, mid-20's passing for 14. Profirio's brother and rebel spy undercover in U. S. army camp.. European-educated aristocrat. Engaging storyteller. Compliant, playful, confident, observant with easy humor. Must move well.

LINC: African-American, mid-50's. Buffalo Soldier Sargeant for segregated Negro unit stationed in Philippines. Aging career Calvaryman struggling to connect with his younger, educated wife, Della and children though letters. Challenged by Jim Crow army conditions and restless men under his command. Loyal, romantic at core, resistant to change.

WOODRUFF: African-American, mid-30's. Enlisted Buffalo Soldier Corporal. College educated. Physically and intellectually imposing. Principled but sometimes annoying and reckless.

MYTH FAGEN/PRIVATE HARLAN; African-American, 25-45. Minstrel charm to gangsta rapper bite. Breaks 4th wall as Chorus, toying with historical time and space. Also an enlisted Buffalo soldier Private. Rural, anecdotal, a slacker, mischievous with ironic humorous insight.

CAPTAIN: Caucasian, 40's. Connor's upper West Side cousin. Prone to romantic and political banter but is deadly serious about his command. Shrewd, ambitious, observant, steely, privileged. Righteous in rank and arrogance. Pounce like a tiger.

CONNOR: Caucasian, 50's. The Captain's chief aide and lower East Side cousin. Proud of Irish background. Demoted military Lifer. Has survived by patience, bitterness and tongue-in-cheek regard for routine and rank. Sympathetic to underserved black soldiers.

DANCERS: Four multi-ethnic male and female, 18-40. Trained, Escrima knowledge a plus but not necessary. Previous theatre and performance experience desired.
