Stories High Workshops Starting in September!
In 1997 Teatro Ng Tanan (Theater for Everyone), a Filipino theater group based out of the Mint Mall on Mission and Fifth Street (TNT would later become part of Bindlestiff Studio in 2000) created Pinoy/Pinay Talk, Eight and a Half Stories High. New writers, actors and directors were invited to participate and/or to send in their written work. The end result was a show of monologues and one acts. Over the years, many artists have come through Stories High and have become seasoned artists and major contributors to Bindlestiff and other art communities. Although Stories High has evolved over the last ten years into a more formalized process, one thing has remained constant: Bindlestiff's desire to provide a platform for new and upcoming writers, actors and directors.
Come and join the tenth annual Stories High Writing Workshop facilitated by Samantha Chanse and Gayle Romasanta. Acting and Directing workshops will be announced in early 2008. This will be an intensive 6 week writing workshop, examining the works of Lysley Tenorio, Eric Bogosian, Marianne Villanueva, Dario Fo and David Mamet, to name a few. In addition to talking about story, tone, setting, dialogue, audience, and character development, students will write their own 10-15 page vignette. Teachers will then facilitate class writing critiques, where each writer will have their pieces read and commented on by peers to help their editing process. This will be a supportive and honest class environment, meant to help each writer push themselves during the difficult task of rewrites and edits. Expect to have reading "homework" every night. This is a timely process, and we can only accommodate writers that can commit to the class and ! work schedule. We will start ON TIME. We embrace all writers (even the closet ones!), from beginning to advanced. Unfortunately, class size is limited to 6-8 students, so please register early to ensure your place.
