EWP ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 1998-99 DAVID HENRY HWANG WRITERS INSTITUTE WORKSHOPEast West Players offers two scholarships are for the 1998-99 session of the David Henry Hwang Writers Institute (DHHWI). The DHHWI is a twenty week writing workshop which culminates in a reading series at East West. Players. The next session begins on September 12. Carole and Harvey Omata have created the Garrett H. Omata Scholarship (Garrett Omata wrote the hit play S.A.M. I AM while a part of the Institute and premiered on stage at EWP), and the Asian Professional Exchange (APEX) has contributed money to provide a scholarship for this upcoming DHHWI session. Named for the Tony Award-winning playwright, the David Henry Hwang Writers Institute counts among its distinguished alumni Tim Toyama (VISAS AND VIRTUE), Judy Soo Hoo (TWICE TOLD CHRISTMAS TALES, TEXAS, and REFRIGERATORS, which placed in the New Voices Playwrighting Competition), PEN Center West Fellow John Song (DREAMS OF MY FATHER'S MUSIC, winner of the New Voices Playwrighting Competition), Noel Alumit (FEAST DAY), and many others who have won awards and have been produced on main stages across the country. Applications to the Institute should include a cover letter
with the applicants name, address, phone number (and email address, if applicable),
as well as a short (1-2 page) writing sample from any genre. Applications
are due on Friday, September 4,1998. Please send all materials to East West
