EAST WEST PLAYERS Announces A Nice Indian Boy Previews Begin February 20th, Opens February 26th
East West Players (EWP), the nation’s largest producing organization of Asian American artistic work and the longest-running professional theatre of color in the country, continues its 48th Anniversary Season Making Light, with the world premiere of A Nice Indian Boy, written by Madhuri Shekar and directed by Snehal Desai.
The Supreme Court Ruling on gay marriage has been decided, and this play is timely in continuing the discussion. A comedy about love and marriage, Naveen Gavaskar and Keshav Kurundkar share all things Indian – from the Hindi language to the difficulty of being gay in Indian culture. Keshav, however, is adopted by Indian parents…and Caucasian.
A Nice Indian Boy is the second place winner of the East West Players Face of the Future Playwriting Competition.
“Madhuri is one of our bright young playwrights of the future, having two openings in the same month (the other, Love and Warcraft, is opening at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta),” says Tim Dang, Producing Artistic Director of East West Players. “EWP is proud to be part of the movement sweeping America fostering the dialogue for same sex marriage. Of note in our production is the intersection of culture, race, generations and gender in this comedy about love and marriage in 2014.”
The design team includes: set design by Kaitlyn Pietras, lighting design by Wen-Ling Liao, costume design by EB Brooks, sound design by Veronika Vorel. Stage manager is Sarah Joynt Borger.
Generous support for this production is provided by the S. Mark Taper Foundation Endowment for East West Players.
