East West Players presents An Afternoon with David Henry HwangEast West Players, the premier Asian Pacific Islander theatre in the country, presents AN AFTERNOON WITH DAVID HENRY HWANG, a unique opportunity to interact with the Tony Award-winning author of M. BUTTERFLY, GOLDEN CHILD, FOB, FAMILY DEVOTIONS as well as adaptor of AIDA and FLOWER DRUM SONG. The event will occur on Sunday, May 6, 2001 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a reception following. Acclaimed actors, including Soon-Tek Oh (MULAN), Amy Hill (ALL AMERICAN GIRL), Beulah Quo (CARRY THE TIGER TO THE MOUNTAIN), Kerri Higuchi (GOLDEN CHILD), Reggie Lee (FOB), and June Kyoko Lu (THE WAITING ROOM), will read scenes and excerpts from Mr. Hwang's work. Mr. Hwang will then discuss some of his thoughts on playwriting, the state of contemporary American theatre, and the urgency of giving voice to the Asian American experience. A Question & Answer session will follow. "We are extremely fortunate to be able to share David's life and art at his namesake theater, the David Henry Hwang Theatre at the Union Center for the Arts. He has been an inspiration to many young API writers and the chance to have a dialogue with him in person is truly exciting," says Ken Narasaki, EWP's Literary Manager. Tim Dang, East West Players&Mac226; Producing Artistic Director, states, "David has always been supportive of the work we do at EWP and I&Mac226;m particularly pleased that we can create this forum where talented writers will be able to gain insights into the creative writing process." This special event is made possible by a generous gift from Henry and Dorothy Hwang, continuing their long-standing support of performing arts that nurture and promote education and interaction between diverse cultures. The Afternoon is free and open to the public but, since seating is limited, advance reservations must be made on or before April 30th by calling East West Players (213-625-7000 x19).
