As part of its ongoing efforts to promote diversity, ABC has given East West Players an endowment to fund a writing scholarship to be awarded twice yearly to deserving applicants of EWP's playwright development program. The endowment will fund the scholarships in perpetuity.EWP's Writers Institute is a 20 week program, which includes 16 weeks of workshop/writing time, culminating in professional public readings of the writers' works. Interested writers can apply to the Institute by sending a one- or two-page writing sample, resume (if applicable) and a cover letter. The Institute includes a ScreenPlay workshop, and The Next Draft workshop, which is focused on rewriting.

"We are aware that East West Players has been a major force in supporting new works from the Asian Pacific American creative community, and that graduates of the David Henry Hwang Writers Institute have emerged successfully in not only theatre, but in film and television. We hope this will encourage the emergence of many other talented writers", said Susan Leeper, Vice President, Current Comedy Series and the Director of the Walt Disney Studios/ABC TV Writing Fellowship Program.

"East West is grateful to ABC and we applaud their extensive outreach efforts, and their willingness to empower new voices by supporting organizations such as ours," responded EWP Literary Manager Ken Narasaki.

Through a series of writing exercises and feedback from other writers, writers will work on one-acts, full-length plays; topics to be discussed include: Narrative Authority, Pressure, Urgency, Texuality, and the Torque of a Play.

Judy has been produced twice at EWP (29 1/2 DREAMS, TWICE TOLD CHRISTMAS TALES), as well as Lodestone SHP (BEASTLY BEAUTIES); she was a winner in our 1996 New Voices Playwriting Competiton (REFRIGERATORS), and a 1999 winner of the Yukon Pacific New Play Award, and is a 2000 PEN West Emerging Voices Fellow.
