Scholarships for East West's Playwright Institute

East West Players (EWP), the nation's first and foremost Asian Pacific American theater company, announces two scholarships for the Summer/Fall 2000 David Henry Hwang Writers Institute (DHHWI), a twenty-week playwriting workshop which culminates in a playreading series. The Institute begins on July 10.

The Garrett H. Omata Memorial Scholarship is named for a former student of the DHHWI whose hit play, S.A.M. I AM, premiered on EWP&Mac226;s mainstage in 1995. The scholarship is available to returning DHHWI students.

The East West Players New Voices Scholarship is the result of a multi-year challenge grant from The James Irvine Foundation to establish a New Works Development Program. The scholarship is available to writers participating in the Institute for the first time. Special consideration will be given to emerging playwrights representing underserved Asian Pacific communities.

The DHHWI is dedicated to the creation and nurturing of new voices in the Asian Pacific American community. Workshop instructors are professional playwrights who help students with writing and dialogue exercises, and story and character development. Named for the Tony Award-winning playwright, the David Henry Hwang Writers Institute counts among its distinguished alumni: Tim Toyama (Visas and Virtue), Euijoon Kim whose MY TIRED BROKE ASS PONTIFICATING SLAPSTICK FUNK world-premiered on EWP's David Henry Hwang mainstage as part of its 1999-2000 Season, Dennis Escobedo's POET OF COLUMBUS AVENUE world-premiered at Pan Asian Rep in New York, Lucy Kim's LEON AND CLARK world-premiered at Playwright's Arena , and Daniel Cariaga's SLEEPWALK was workshopped at ASK's 1999 Fall Festival and world-premiered at Playwright's Arena.

Applicants for the Garrett H. Omata Memorial Scholarship and The East West Players New Voices Scholarship should write a one-page cover letter addressing one&Mac226;s goals and desires for playwriting, along with a one- or two-page writing sample of any genre and a completed DHHWI application (available at the EWP administrative office, 213.625.7000 or on EWP website: www.eastwestplayers.org). Scholarship applications are due June 30, 2000. Send all materials to East West Players, DHHWI, 244 S. San Pedro, Suite 301, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
