All characters play 18 years old in Act 1 in 1958 and 38 years old in Act 2 in 1978 and must speak Hawaiian Pidgin English. Casting three maless and three females plus understudies for the roles of Russell Shima, Benjamin Lee, Roland (Zippy) Ching, Ruby Ogawa, Sharon Uchida, Donna Wong.

Tony award winning drama about a psychiatrist assigned to a 17-year old boy who blinds six horses with a metal spike.

  • Martin Dysart - psychiatrist to be played by George Takei. Looking for understudy only.
  • Alan Strang -17, naïve but troubled youth, full-frontal nudity required.
  • Jill Mason - 20, stable groommer that befriends Alan, full frontal nudity required.
  • Nurse - any age, professional.
  • Hester Salomon - Administrator, a colleague of Professor Dysart.
  • Frank Strang - 40s, middle class, father of Alan Strang.
  • Dora Strang - 40s, middle class, mother of Alan Strang.
  • Horseman/Nugget - 30s-40s, tall build, powerful, also to play a horse in a theatrical stylization.
  • Harry Dalton/Horse - Tall, rugged, stable owner, also to play a horse in a theatrical stylization.
  • Horses/Ensemble - 4 men, tall, great physique to play horses in a theatrical stylization with masks and six inch hooves.

  • Beggar Woman - late-30s, female, mezzo with a strong belt and head voice.
  • Anthony Hope - 20s, male high baritone to an A.
  • Johanna - Must be 18 to play 15, legit lyric soprano to a high D.
  • Tobias Ragg - must be 18 to play younger, waif, short, tenor to an A.
  • Judge Turpin - 40s-50s male, strong baritone/bass a mean demeanor.
  • The Beadle - late-30s to early-40s, tenor with a strong head voice to a high D.
