CASTING FOR EAST WEST PLAYERS 35TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON

EWP is now accepting submission for the 2000-2001 season. Below is a cast breakdown for the four plays being produced. Please send your picture and resume to the address below with the name of the production and the role you would like to be considered for marked on the outside of the envelope. Please submit a headshot for each production you would like to be considered for. We are also looking for non-AEA understudies for all roles.

From the author of BIG HUNK O' BURNIN' LOVE, seven Asian Americans (Thai, Filipino, Chinese, Japanese) gather atop a Las Vegas wedding chapel every week for a UFO watch. One particular night brings about profound changes in all their lives when the impossible becomes a reality. This vibrant and moving new comedy won both the International Herald Tribune
Playwriting Competition and the Julie Harris Playwright Award Competition.

GILBERT: 21; a Filipino American; immigrated to America at the age of one; Shimmyís son
LANA: 21; a Chinese American; born in the U.S.A.; Nefís sister
MAY: 65; a Thai Immigrant; immigrated to America at the age of 43; Pattyís mother
HIRO: 41; a Japanese American; immigrated to America at the age of 26; Pattyís husband
SHIMMY: 43; a Filipino American; immigrated to America at the age of 23; Gilbertís mother
NEF: 26; a Chinese American; born in the U.S.A.; Lanaís brother

Due to the collaboration with Singapore Repertory, two actors may be cast from Singapore in this production.

THE YEAR OF THE DRAGON

A talented and controversial writer, Chin's play barges through the comfortable stereotypes of the Asian American. When first produced in 1974, the play created an enormous stir and has had a profound impact on a generation of young Asian American writers. "The language is frequently strong, and the bitterness, even when wrapped in some very funny comedy, is unrelenting." --New York Times. Even more poignant to be presented in the Year of the Dragon, this play will be directed by EWP Founding Artistic Director Mako.

Philip Gotanda takes a look at stereotypes and hard choices in this serio-comic valentine to Asian American actors, past and present.
