East West announces Y2K Contest winners

After months of reading by a crack committee of readers made up of ten theatre professionals, and an august panel of judges that included Wakako Yamauchi (AND THE SOUL SHALL DANCE), Tram Le (Artistic Director of CLUB O&Mac226; NOODLES), David Henry Hwang (GOLDEN CHILD, M. BUTTERFLY), and Philip Kan Gotanda (SISTERS MATSUMOTO, YANKEE DAWG YOU DIE), we finally have the winners of our Y2K New Voices Playwriting Competition. They are:

  1. THE CLOUDS, THE OCEAN AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN by Michael Premsrirat (San Francisco)
  2. A SLIGHT ITCH by Derek Nguyen (New York)
  3. HIT by Alice Tuan (Los Angeles)

Congratulations to them, as well as the finalists, who included:

  • THIS CUL DE SAC by Annette Lee
  • SHADOW DANCE OF A MOSQUITO BOXER by Ed Ramolete

Semi-finalists included:

  • THE SUPERFRIENDS OF FLUSHING, QUEENS by J. Hyung Lee
  • SENSITIVITY TRAINING FOR ME by Daniel Cariaga
  • ANCESTORS by Suzanne Kim

Each play was read blindly by the original committee and the final panel of judges; many of whom are anxious to learn the titles and identities of the plays and playwrights. Well, here they are!
