East West seeks PR/Marketing Manager

As the nation's premier Asian American theatre organization, East West Players produces outstanding works and educational programs that give voice to the Asian Pacific American experience.

Established in 1965, East West Players has enriched the Southern California community for over 40 years with a distinctive representation of the APA experience. EWP's award-winning mainstage provides performing opportunities for Asian and Pacific Islander performers through productions of new and classic plays and musicals. EWP's comprehensive arts education programs includes: The Actors Conservatory; David Henry Hwang Writers Institute; the Alliance of Creative Talent Services (ACTS); and Theatre for Youth.

Currently, EWP operates with an organizational budget of over 1 million and six full-time staff members, and has been recognized as "the nation's pre-eminent Asian American theater troupe" (New York Times 12/16/01).

POSITION SUMMARY

East West Players seeks a reliable and responsible candidate to head the theatre's PR/Marketing department. The PR/Marketing Manager is responsible for increasing subscribers, single tickets sales and group sales using annual goals detailed in the fiscal budget as an achievement guide. The manager will also maintain the continual institutional presence of East West Players in the immediate community as well as a national front. Office hours are M-F 10 am-6 pm with occasional weekends and late evenings for special events.

RESPONSIBILIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to):

MANAGEMENT
•Reports to Managing Director (and if Managing Director is not available, the Producing Artistic Director
•Works closely with the Audience Services Manager and all functions related to the Audience Services department
•Maintain and adhere to department budget
•Attend staff, department and other meetings as required

PUBLIC RELATIONS
•Maintain press list and nurture relationships with press contacts in print, radio, television and internet media
•Create and distribute press and calendar releases of all EWP events and programs
•Pitch feature stories to major print, radio, television and internet media
•Coordinate opening night receptions and other receptions at the theater
•Meet and greet press at all EWP functions and provide press kits
•Write and edit articles for newsletter and email newsletter
•Be familiar with all productions, plays, cast, designers and crew
•Represent EWP at all social events, festivals, community events, and similar functions

MARKETING
•Generate and implement marketing plan for the annual season
•Manage relations with graphic designer, website designer and summer intern
•Evaluate and track sales trends to create stronger targeted marketing with higher success ratios
•Coordinate with the Administrative Assistant the maintenance of the database
•Manage all elements of season subscription campaign, including:
oTrack and study demographics for targeted marketing campaign
oSeason brochure
oRenewal telemarketing & subscriber retention
oCreate and manage promotions and ticket promotion codes
•File and archive all press and production photos and materials
•Videotape one performance of each production
•Create lobby cast board
•Create copy for EWP website
•Coordinate and attend photo calls
•Manage the production of the mainstage playbill

QUALIFICATIONS
•Bachelor degree and 2-3 years comparable experience required;
•Demonstrated knowledge of theatre administration and/or arts marketing;
•Past supervising experience;
•Strong oral and written communication skills;
•Ability to adapt quickly to quickly fluctuating needs of the department;
•Ability to multitask, and work well under pressure and hard deadlines;
•Ability to work flexible hours (some nights and weekends);
•Event planning experience, a plus;
•Microsoft Word, MS Excel, internet research, graphic design skills required;
•MS Access, Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, and DonorPerfect, a plus;
•Basic HTML and Web design experience, a plus.

COMPENSATION
$28,000-$32,000 DOE. Full Benefits after probationary period.
