EWP presents mini-confernce

A MINI-CONFERENCE/PERFORMANCE: SICK OF 'A-A'? TURN 'ASIAN-AMERICAN' INSIDE OUT
TO BE HELD AT EAST WEST PLAYERS

A Mini-Conference/Performance "Sick of 'A-A'? Turn 'Asian American' Inside Out" will be held at East West Players David Henry Hwang Theater at the Union Center for the Arts on Saturday, October 9, 1999 from 11am to 5pm. The theater is located at 120 North Judge John Aiso Street (formerly San Pedro Street) in Little Tokyo downtown Los Angeles. The conference is assembled and curated by Alice Tuan, resident playwright at East West Players.

The purpose of the conference is to widen the angle of audience perception of Asian-American theater. This one-day conference/performance will navigate towards new spaces in which to think about the meaning of Asian-American through dialogue and performance. Although the conference focuses on the gamut of Asian American theater, its dialogue will be relevant for those, both Asian and non-Asian, who wish to turn old forms inside out. It's the end of a cycle post-it time-post-modern, post-feminist, post-identity. What's to come next when anything is up for grabs?

Scheduled speakers include: Theo Gonzalves, Musical Director of Tongue in a Mood; Dorinne Kondo, Director of Asian American Studies, USC; Jan Lin, Sociologist, Occidental College; Susette Min, Curator of The Mourning After; Dean Toji, Geographer, Cal State Long Beach; Alice Tuan, Playwright; Euijoon Kim, Playwright; Diana Son, Playwright/Screenwriter; Sandra Tsing-Loh, Writer/Performer; Chay Yew, Playwright/Director; and Karin Aguilar San Juan, Sociologist/Activist. Frank Chin will make a special appearance on the steps of East West Players.

A survey of Asian American theater will include excerpts from the plays written by Sandra Tsing-Loh, Jon Shirota, Wakako Yamauchi, Philip Kan Gotanda, David Henry Hwang, Jessica Hagadorn, Chay Yew, Diana Son, Alice Tuan, Euijoon Kim, Daniel Cariaga, Judy Soo Hoo, Jason Fong, Annette Lee, and Nic Kim. These readings will be directed by Deborah Nishimura, with participation from the EWP Actors Network and David Henry Hwang Writers Institute.

Admission is free to "Sick of 'A-A'? Turn 'Asian American' Inside Out." To RSVP or for more information, please call 213.625.7000, x19.
