East West in first international collaboration

East West Players (EWP), now celebrating 35 years of Asian Pacific American theatre, has teamed up for the first time with The Singapore Repertory Theatre for the World Premiere of THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING by Prince Gomolvilas. The first production of the season, THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING represents the first international collaboration for EWP and the first Los Angeles appearance for The Singapore Repertory Theatre.

THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING is about seven Asian Americans gathering atop a Las Vegas wedding chapel for every week for UFO watch. One particular night brings about profound change in all their lives when the impossible becomes a reality. In a city where UFOs and bingo lounges are everywhere, everything is possible!

"It's a collaboration that speaks eloquently of the Asian Diaspora coming together," says Tim Dang, Producing Artistic Director of EWP and director of THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING. "The results, hopefully will both entertain and shake up some cultural preconceptions."

The cast and design team of THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING are currently in abroad rehearsing for the opening of the run in Singapore at the on October 19. Dang is enthusiastic about the progress made by the play's seven protagonists (two played by Singaporean actors and five played by American actors), as they wait for the "miracle" of sighting UFOs to change their lives, dream of success and finding a "home" in America.

"My reading," says Dang, "is that the play is deliberately set in the superficial city of Las Vegas. Then it says you have to look "deep" inside yourself for happiness, for what you need to lift life to another level, and says this through some really funny moments."

After its Singapore debut, THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING runs for four weeks in Los Angeles, opening on Wednesday, November 8 and closing on December 3, 2000. Low priced previews begin on Thursday, November 2. Performances for THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING are Thursday through Saturday evenings at 8pm and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2pm. There is no Saturday matinee performance on Saturday, November 11 or Thursday evening performance on Thanksgiving Day, November 23. Low priced previews are November 2, 3, and 4 at 8pm and November 5at 2pm.
