Character Breakdowns

[Note! These are substantially different from the roles in the earlier stage and film version!]

MEI-LI
Asian female, 20's. Excellent singer soprano/mix to high belt. Must be able to dance/move well. An idealistic immigrant who bravely leaves her home in China only to find she will never fit into the American dream. She is vulnerable and sometimes naïve but also possesses a great strength of character and a strong will. A beautiful and strong woman who can break your heart. Will sing I'm Going To Like It Here and a new version of Love Look Away.

TA
Asian male, 20's. Tenor. Should be an excellent singer and should move well. A completely assimilated young man who embraces all things American, especially rock and roll. Dreams of success in show business, and has cultivated a rebellious, sexy "James Dean" persona. Sings You Are Beautiful and Like A God.

LINDA
Asian female 20's. A sexy young woman who has rejected her Chinese heritage and reinvented herself as an American. Tough, wise-cracking and will do anything to succeed in show business and land an American man. Great looking, dancer with a good belt voice. Sings I Enjoy Being A Girl

WANG
50's Asian male. Actor/singer. An immigrant who has fled communist China and tries valiantly to preserve Chinese culture in America. He is ultimately transformed from a stubborn traditionalist to a thoroughly modern American nightclub performer. He is Ta's father. Sings Chop Suey and Don't Marry Me

MADAME LIANG
Asian female, 50's. A former Hollywood bit player who has become a tough theatrical agent. Wants to exploit all things Chinese for her own profit. A likable, sassy fun character. An Asian Ethel Merman. Sings in belt voice. Should prepare Grant Avenue for auditions.

HARVARD
Asian male, 20's. A young man who works in a nightclub. Wry sense of humor, very funny. Should sing and move well

CHIN
Asian male 60's. A contemporary of Wang's and his great friend and supporter. Wise old sage.
