Honolulu, HI? As part of auditions for Kumu Kahua¹s World Premiere production of All That Remains, playwright Mona Z. Smith and director Traci Mariano are requesting - though not requiring - a prepared, contemporary dramatic monologue from a play other than All That Remains. Such auditions are standard practice, but rarely required in Hawai?i theatres; Kumu Kahua Theatre is offering this one-evening audition monologue workshop to help actors make the best use of this opportunity.
A world premiere by Mona Z. Smith, directed by Traci Mariano, All That Remains is a sweeping epic of World War II, in which the ghosts of 100th Infantry Battalion and the 442d Regimental Combat Team soldiers return. Telling a story of loyalty and betrayal, courage and cowardice, they re-create an act of violence that torments both the living and the dead.
Using an experimental style drawing from Japanese Noh theatre, Mona Z. Smith¹s All That Remains offers a challenging, provocative look at the heroism and despair of war.
Both Mona Z. Smith (of New York) and Traci Mariano (of Los Angeles) will be present throughout the rehearsal process at Kumu Kahua Theatre.
The workshop is open to anyone, including actors and actresses not auditioning for All That Remains.
You are required to bring to the workshop: a pencil; a memorized 2-3 minute contemporary dramatic monologue; a printed copy of the text; and your performance resume.
At the workshop you will receive assistance meeting your level of experience/education, including: insight on the writer and director and what they are looking for in actors and characters (including a list of basic advice, do's and don¹t's, what to do with your hands and feet, where to look, how to handle nerves, and more); a critique of your resume; and individual work on your monologue from Kumu Kahua Managing Director, Donna Blanchard; Oahu Fringe Festival Director, Misa Tupou; Kumu Kahua director, actor, and Mid-Pacific Institute School for the Arts Educator, John Wat; and Kumu Kahua Artistic Director, Harry Wong.
Space is limited. Please email kumukahuadirector@gmail.com to reserve your spot.
Class will meet on Thursday, January 17th at 6:00 PM, at Scott Roger's Studio: 1174 Waimanu Street, Suite A, Honolulu
