Auditions Set For Kumu Kahua’s Production Of The Hilo Massacre

Directors Denny Hironaga and Harry Wong are seeking an ensemble of 15 actors and actresses.  Originally written by Tremayne Tamayose for the Center for Labor Education & Research, University of Hawai‘i (now at West O‘ahu) for broadcast as part of the Center’s Rice & Roses series on Hawaii Public Television, The Hilo Massacre takes place on August 1, 1938 where more than 200 Big Island men and women belonging to different labor unions attempted to peacefully demonstrate against the arrival of a ship from Oahu to express their solidarity with striking workers in Honolulu.  They were met by a force of over 70 police officers that tear-gassed, hosed and fired riot guns into the crowd. 

Auditions will be held at Kumu Kahua Theatre 46 Merchant Street on Saturday, February 27, 6pm to 9pm, and Sunday, February 28, 6pm to 9pm.  The entrance into the theatre faces a park on Merchant Street.  Rehearsals begin as early as Monday, March 8.  Performances will be from May 20 through June 20, with the possibility of a week’s extension.  Auditioners are strongly encouraged to read the script before coming to audition.  Scripts are available for loan with a $10 cash deposit at Kumu Kahua Theatre.  Call 536-4222 to get a script and for more information.
