Ma-Yi's Anthology Out This October

Showcasing the first 17 years of World Premieres, Ma-Yi's new anthology, Savage Stage: Plays by Ma-Yi Theater Company is off to the printers. The book will include the plays Savage Acts by Kia Corthron, Jorge Ignacio Cortiñas, Han Ong, and Sung Rno; Flipzoids by Ralph Peña; peregriNasyon by Chris Millado; Middle Finger by Han Ong; Woman From the Other Side of the World by Linda Faigao-Hall; wAve by Sung Rno; Trial by Water by Qui Nguyen; The Romance of Magno Rubio by Lonnie Carter; and Project: Balangiga by Ralph Peña and Sung Rno.

"We are very excited about the upcoming anthology," commented Ma-Yi Executive Director Jorge Ortoll. "It will not only showcase the many contributions Ma-Yi Theater Company has made to the theater community but also provide a valuable resources for theater artists, writers, teachers, and students."

"Ma-Yi Theater Company is the United State’s pre-eminent Asian American theater company. It has commissioned, developed, work-shopped and produced new plays about the Asian and Asian American experience. It has raised the bar for Asian American playwrights, actors, designers, composers, directors and choreographers. Its first ten years were mainly Filipino American. In 1999, it embraced all Asian America," said Ma-Yi Literary Manager Josephine Barrios.

"In the past two hundred years, the United States has had more immigration activity than any other nation in the world. The Asian migrations came in many waves and for many reasons," said Barrios. "Within the covers of Savage Stage are nine theater pieces produced and premiered by Ma-Yi Theater Company. Each is unique in voice, in message, in story-telling. We believe they are all representative of the vitality, intelligence, vibrancy and soul of the Asian American and the many contributions they have made to our society. Ma-Yi will continue its important work of capturing the essence – thru theater and collaboration – the many worlds of the Asian American experience."
