Ma-Yi Theater Company launches its 16th SeasonObie Award-winning Ma-Yi Theater Company, one of the nation's leading troupes dedicated to portraying the Asian-American experience, launches its 16th season with the Off-Broadway, world-premiere production of Savage Acts, October 9-17, at Ohio Theatre (66 Wooster Street) in Manhattan. Performances run Tuesdays-Saturdays at 8PM, and Saturdays and Sundays at 3PM. Savage Acts is a new Off-Broadway, collaborative play by noted playwrights Kia Corthron (LIGHT RAISE THE ROOF), Jorge Cortiñas (BLIND MOUTH SINGING), Han Ong (MIDDLE FINGER), Sung Rno (wAve), and Alice Tuan (LAST OF THE SUNS). Directed by Ma-Yi Theater Company Artistic Director Ralph Peña, Savage Acts examines how the perceptions and representations of ethnicity have changed over the past 100 years. Ma-Yi continues its 2004-05 season with House/Boy, a solo piece with music conceived and performed by Nicky Paraiso, at La MaMa ETC (74 East 4th Street), November 4-14, Thursdays-Saturday at 10PM, Sundays at 5PM. Also directed Mr. Peña, Paraiso's humorous and thought-provoking autobiographical one-man show explores identity, sexuality and the enduring theme of what "home" means to Filipino Americans. In addition to Savage Acts and House/Boy, Ma-Yi Theater Company will co-present Death of Nations with International WOW Theatre, to be performed October 16th at 3 and 8pm at Aaron Davis Hall (CUNY Harlem, West 135th Street and Convent Avenue) in conjunction with "Performing Ethnicity," a month-long arts festival. Written and directed by Josh Fox (THE BOMB), Death of Nations is a provocative, original theatre piece featuring artists from the U.S., Japan and Thailand. Ma-Yi won eight Village Voice OBIE Awards for its highly praised premiere of Lonnie Carter's THE ROMANCE OF MAGNO RUBIO, which has since toured Manila, Laguna Beach, and Chicago. Other recent productions of note by Ma-Yi include THE SQUARE, Han Ong's MIDDLE FINGER, WATCHER and Alice Tuan's LAST OF THE SUNS.
