NWAAT announces Auditions for The Fantasticks

The Northwest Asian American Theatre (NWAAT) will hold auditions for a summer presentation of The Fantasticks by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt. Auditions will be held Thursday, May 18th, from 6PM to 8PM and Sunday, May 20th, from 10AM to 1PM. Auditions will be held at NWAAT's Nippon Kan Theatre, located at 622 South Washington Street in Seattle's International District.

To audition, please prepare one contemporary monologue and one verse and chorus of a show tune. Actors must bring sheet music in their key and have a second song prepared, as they may be asked to sing an alternate selection. An accompanist will be provided. Auditions are limited to 3 minutes. Actors must call 340-1445 to schedule an audition appointment.

Actors are asked to bring a resume of theatrical experience and a non-returnable headshot. Piano accompaniment will be provided.

"The Fantasticks," the world's longest running musical, will perform in the summer of 2000, opening July 27th and running through the month of August. This music theatre classic, based on the novel Les Romanesques by Edmond
Rostand, was created for the stage by duo Tom Jones (Book and Lyrics) and
Harvey Schmidt (Music). This simple love story is so popular that it is about to celebrate it's fortieth anniversary, making it the longest running musical in America! It's likely that you will know a few of the songs from the show including "Soon It's Gonna Rain" and "Try To Remember." Manuel R. Cawaling, former NWAAT Associate Artistic Director directs.

"The Fantasticks" features an ensemble cast of 9. The break down is as follows:

Asian Male (early 20's)
-The Boy (Matt), an innocent young man
Baritone/Tenor (A - high G)

Asian Female (early 20's)
-The Girl (Luisa), a romantic idealist
Soprano (B - high B)

Non-Asian Male (20's - 30's)
-The Narrator (El Gallo)a rakish gallant
Baritone (A-flat - high G)

Asian Male (40's - 50's)
-The Boy's Father (Hucklebee), former navy man, meticulous gardener
Baritone (A - high F-sharp)

Asian Male (40's - 50's)
-The Girl's Father (Bellomy), a merchant,also a picky gardener
Baritone (A - high F-sharp)

Asian Male (50-70's)
-The Actor (Henry), an aging, over-the-top thespian (non-singing)

Asian (20's - 30's)
-The Man Who Dies (Mortimer), Henry's goofy sidekick (non-singing)
