DANCE AND PUPPETRY WORKSHOPS COMING SOON TO A THEATRE NEAR YOU!
(well, Nippon Kan Theatre that is!)
Northwest Asian American Theatre's BRIDGES Arts Education Program is sponsoring the following exciting workshops!
PUPPETRY WORKSHOP: Traditional Indian & Indonesia Puppetry
NOVEMBER 3, 7 &Mac246; 9:30 pm
This workshop will present an overview of Indian and Indonesian puppetry traditions, their myths, religious and cultural associations, and a hands-on look at some of the puppets themselves. Using slides and actual puppets, we will go on a backstage tour of two of the most prolific puppetry traditions of Asia. Workshop participants will then make their own shadow puppets using traditional Indian and Indonesian designs and have a chance to bring them to life behind the shadow puppet screen.

He has conducted academic and hands-on workshops for both children and adults around the country on South and Southeast Asian puppetry traditions. Scott has extensive experience in craft and study of Asian puppetry traditions, including in Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, India and the U.S. In 1990-91 on aWatson Fellowship, he traveled to and researched South and Southeast Asian puppetry. In 1995-96, Scott returned to India, where he was born and raised, as a Fulbright Fellow to conduct research for his Masters thesis on Indian theatre and puppetry.
BALINESE DANCE WORKSHOP
NOVEMBER 9, TUESDAY 6:30pm - 9:30pm
This introductory workshop is designed to broaden the movement vocabulary of the dancer while enjoying Bali&Mac226;s culture as expressed through its dance forms. And to have fun! The movement is highly stylized, originating from ancient classical dance. Dance experience not necessary, but the workshop will require some skill in following and repeating both large and small muscle movement sequences; head and facial movements will be taught. The workshop will focus on female dance basics, but will also include some male dance basics using both Western and Balinese styles. Aspects of the culture and language will be introduced and applied to support the dance practice.
Instructor: BONNIE BREW
Bonnie Brew enjoys teaching and facilitating movement experiences with dancers and non-dancers alike. Bonnie has studied Balinese dance and music at the University of Hawaii with Hazel Chung-Hood and Dr. Mantel Hood, and in Bali with Njoman Kakul. In addition to Balinese dance, Bonnie has pursued other ethnic dance including Hula, Javanese, Korean and Tongan dance. She has also studied modern dance and is a trained movement therapist and creative movement teacher.
