Pork Filled Players go Pork to the Future! The Pork Filled Players blast back to the past with their latest sketch comedy show, Pork to the Future, running September 18 to October 3 at 8 pm, at Seattle’s Odd Duck Studio (1214 10th Ave.) Spinning from the success of their bi-monthly late-nite Spam*O*Rama comedy cabaret, the Northwest’s long running Asian American theatre group ventures back in time to the decade of the 80s with an all new retro-inspired sketch show, bringing back everything from GI Joe to homemade mix tapes to classic John Hughes films. Remember the old days of Michael Jackson mania, the CIA running roughshod over Third World countries, and really bad Seattle baseball teams—wait, didn’t we just go through all that? Joining the Players is a tri-pendicular list of guest stars, starting opening weekend with Seattle sketch duo Charles, a crowd favorite at last year’s SketchFest Seattle. The next weekend (September 25 and 26) features Seattle’s Burlesque All Stars, including Miss Elaine Yes, Pinky Shines, and Iva Handfull, strutting their stuff to the baddest 80s tunes. And closing weekend (October 2 and 3) features the triumphant return of Vancouver’s premier Asian-Canadian sketch comedy group, Assaulted Fish. The Pork Filled Players is helmed by founding member Roger Tang and lead writer Maggie Lee, backed by the zany antics of Brian Beckley, Matt Dela Cruz, Agastya Kohli, Toni Rose, and Yvette Zaepfel. “What’s great about our group is our diversity,” says Ms. Lee. “Not only multiculturally, but also in terms of gender. PFP is almost half female members, 43 percent to be exact, which is kind of a rarity in the local comedy scene. It’s at least 10 percent more…er, 13 percent…what, do you think all Asians are math whizzes or something? We have a lot of funny ladies here, ready to kick some comedic butt!” Tickets are $12 general and $10 for students and seniors, and are available at the door and online at Brown Paper Tickets. For more information, try the PFP website or email oink at porkfilled.com. Scientists, programmers, and scribblers by day…By night, they are the Pork Filled Players! Since 1997, the Pork Filled Players have waged a never-ending battle to unleash their funny bone on audiences of every race, creed, and gender across the Northwest. Beneath their guises as mild-mannered engineers, journalists, and office workers, the Players have honed their humor like a scalpel (or is it dull meat cleaver?) to whack away at notions of race, class, and culture in 21st Century America. Adept at both sketch comedy and traditional theatre, the Players are the Northwest’s longest running Asian American theatre group, using humor to achieve maximum tongue-in-cheekiness, biting cultural/political satire, and hilarious racial disharmony, all with an Amazing Kung-Fu Griptm! |
