SALAAM seeks new plays

Young and emerging writers as well as experienced and professional playwrights are encouraged to submit their work. You don't have to be South Asian to submit a play! It is encouraged that plays do deal with either issues related to the South Asian subcontinent or South Asia in some literal or metaphorical way. If you feel your play doesn't exactly fit that bill but is only tangentially related to South Asia, submit anyway! REMEMBER: Scripts must be original, plays do not have to be contemporary and writers may submit more than one script.

Selected plays will receive a number of rehearsal hours/ professional developmental workshops and will culminate in a directed staged reading at SALAAM 3rd Mondays (S3M).

The goal of AWAAZ, other than to expose our large and diverse SALAAM audience to new and emerging writing, is to develop voices that will go on to be valuable storytellers about South Asian issues through entertaining theatricality and thereby add to the already diverse texture of the New York theatrical landscape.

All submissions should include:

• A cover page, which contains the playwright's name, address and phone number.
• Name of Play.
• Type of Play (one-act, full-length, one-person show, etc.)
• Number of male and female characters.
• A brief plot synopsis.
• A list of those you would like to be involved with the reading (if applicable).
• A self-addressed, stamped envelope, if you wish confirmation that we've received your submission.

Unused scripts will be returned to the playwright only if a large envelopewith appropriate postage is included with your submission.

Deadline: May 20th, 2004 (postmark deadline). Please do not fail to include your contact information. Plays submitted after the postmark deadline will not be considered.

Directors and Actors are encouraged to drop off or send headshots and resumes to SALAAM Theatre, 16 West 32nd Street, Suite 10C, New York, NY 10001. Please write "AWAAZ 2004 Play Reading Series" on the envelope. No email headshot submissions, please.

* AWAAZ is not only to help emerging playwrights through staged readings and development workshops but also develop some of these plays with an eye to full productions for SALAAM Theatre's 2005 Season. Awaaz means "voice".
