San Diego Chinese Center Celebrates 30th Anniversary! Teams With Chinese Pirate Productions For David Henry Hwang's Golden Child

Director/Producer Andy Lowe and Chinese Pirate Productions teams with the 10th Avenue Theatre and the San Diego Chinese Center for their joint presentation of GOLDEN CHILD, by David Henry Hwang. Best known for their Annual Chinese New Year Food and Cultural Faire, which will be held January 28 and 29, 2012 in celebration of the Year of the Dragon, the San Diego Chinese Center (SDCC) has provided cultural programs and charitable services for San Diego's Chinese American community since 1972. SDCC shares a history with local Asian American theatre artists having helped the early development of the 22 year old Asian Story Theater in 1989, and in 1996, when they hosted the San Diego Asian American Repertory Theatre's production of David Henry Hwang's F.O.B. at their facilities in the heart of San Diego's Asian Pacific Thematic District on 3rd Avenue.

Now celebrating their 30th anniversary, SDCC continues this tradition with Chinese Pirate Productions! http://www.sdchinesecenter.org/ Chinese Pirate Productions (CPP) was founded by Director/Producer Andy Lowe at the beginning of 2011, and premiered last July with the nationally acclaimed DR. HORRIBLE'S SING ALONG BLOG - LIVE, that Lowe directed, produced and adapted from the Joss Whedon web-musical. Additionally, CPP has been an active collaborator
supporting productions with the Asian Story Theater, Gam3rs: the Play, as well as non-theatrical events such as last fall's AMP Music Festival and the Asian Cultural Festival of San Diego. Funded in part by a campaign on the website Kickstarter.com (a crowd-funding site used by many artists to build support for projects), this will be the second production "sailing" under the CPP flag. GOLDEN CHILD was the second play to earn playwright DAVID HENRY HWANG a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Play in 1998, his first being M. BUTTERFLY which won the Tony Award in 1988. His most recent, CHINGLISH, just opened on Broadway after a critically acclaimed run at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago.

Much like CHINGLISH and many of Hwang's previous plays, GOLDEN CHILD is a story of East/West culture clash.

Eng Tieng-Bin returns home to China after spending three years in the Philippines. He greets his daughter, three wives, and their traditional Confucian home with a new found interest in modern "Occidental" culture. Much to his wives' dismay, he has also invited a Christian missionary into their home, whose lessons may allow him to follow his heart and re-marry his one true love, his "third wife," as his ONLY wife. With each character representing a different virtue, be it tradition, ambition, passion, idealism or hope, GOLDEN CHILD examines the politics of religious conversion at the dawn of an intercultural world.

GOLDEN CHILD will also will mark the inaugural production in the 10th Avenue Theatre's 4th Floor CABARET, a new secondary performance venue in the Downtown Arts complex that already sports a 100+ seat theater Auditorium, a Gallery space, Rehearsal rooms, Artist studios, a rooftop event centre and the offices of the nationally acclaimed Mo'olelo Performing Arts Company.
Starring Kym Miller, Jyl Kaneshiro, Karen Li, Janny Li, Albert Park, Michael Nieto and Dana Byrne. With Asst. Director - Anne Tran Davis, Sets - Jennifer Imbler, Costumes - Caroline Rousset-Johnson, Lighting - Lace Lila Flores-King, and Sound - Jane Lui.

GOLDEN CHILD will open Sunday February 5th at 7:00pm and run Fri - Mon through
February 25th. Advance tickets can be purchased at Brown Paper Tickets: event #217810
