The Professional Artists Lab and the California NanoSystems Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara announce a collaborative effort, the first International STAGE Script Competition, open to plays about science and technology.

Script
The winning script will receive $10,000 USD; a staged reading with a cast of professional actors and simultaneous participation in an awards event with distinguished professionals from the worlds of theatre, film, science and technology; and the opportunity to go through the Professional Artists Lab's development process, which includes access to advice and guidance from professional theatre and film artists as well as experts in the fields of science, engineering and technology.

STAGE Script Competition Submission Guidelines
1. Submitted plays must explore scientific and/or technological stories, themes, issues and/or events. Authors are strongly encouraged to avoid the stereotypes often assigned to science, technology, and those who engage in these disciplines. This competition is not open to plays written in the genre of science fiction.

2. All entries must be postmarked on or before December 15, 2005.

3. All plays must be original, full-length (minimum running time: 70 minutes), and submitted in English.

4. More specifics about eligibility:
1. Plays that have been published, received a full-fledged production, or been reviewed are not eligible. Plays that have had readings or a workshop are acceptable.
2. Musicals are eligible. Musical submissions should include samples of original music on CD.
3. Plays or theatre pieces incorporating multi-media are acceptable. Material presented in a new form or not entirely script-based is also acceptable. In these cases, please submit an artistic statement that describes such elements in detail. Multi-media/new forms may also submit samples of the visual interpretation of the piece, e.g., sketches, slides, DVD, or the like.
4. Collaborations are eligible.
5. Original material based on an existing published work or the like may be submitted if the author(s) are
1. the owners of the existing published work or
2. have written permission from the! author and owner of the existing published work to adapt this work for the stage and a copy of this written permission accompanies the submission of your play and all supporting materials. Any adaptations that do not fulfill these requirements are not eligible.
6. No translations or screenplays are being accepted at this time.
5. Authors may submit more than one script, but each submission must be treated as a separate entry and sent under separate cover.
6. To assist the STAGE competition in ongoing fund-raising efforts - and to thereby assist future artists - we ask the winning author(s) to credit, accompanied by respective logos, on the title page of all printed materials of future readings, workshops, productions, programs and publications of the winning piece, as follows: "Developed with the Assistance of the Professional Artists Lab, the Californ! ia Nanosystems Institute, and the STAGE Project."
7. The winning play will be announced on June 15, 2006. Scripts will be judged by an esteemed panel of jurors, to be announced shortly. Please check this website for updates:

8. All submissions must include:
1. Two copies of the play, in English. Since scripts will be judged as blind submissions, the title pages on both copies of the play should include only the name of the play and the year in which it was written.
2. Completed entry form, as follows:

3. A one-page (maximum) synopsis of the script.
4. A bio/resume for each author.
5. A cover letter, including any additional information about the authors and their work; the specific manner in which the play relates to the fields of science and technology; how the play has developed up to the present; and how the author(s) envision the future development of the script and the culmination of this work.

Receipt of submissions will be acknowledged by e-mail.
