Deep Water, a play by Loretta Seto

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre helps the next generation of multicultural minority voices shine through with its new play development readings. On April 21, MSG Theatre Lab presents a free staged reading of talented emerging playwright Loretta Seto's new work, Deep Water, at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam. Seto is a promising young playwright and author whose one-woman show Why Weight? featured at the 2011 Vancouver International Fringe Festival and the 2012 Brink Fest. Her first children's book, Mooncakes, will be released on April 1 (Orcha Book Publishers).

Deep Water is a touching and funny one-woman play about a relationship therapist whose world spirals out of control when she falls pregnant following an affair. As her husband succumbs to depression, she must decide where her future lies and what to do with her unborn child.

VACT has brought on a high calibre cast and creative team comprised of the city's finest theatre practitioners to bring this brand new work to life. They include: Director Lynna Goldhar-Smith (Wet Ink Collective), performer Andrea Yu (Solo Collective Theatre Society), and dramaturge Ray Hsu (award-winning author and UBC Creative Writing Lecturer).

Loretta Seto is a fiction and screenwriter, as well as a playwright. She has been published in Ricepaper magazine, the anthology Strike the Wok, and CBC Radio's Between the Covers. She has also had two short films "Once a Fish" and "Ripples" produced with funding from Citytv. Loretta completed her MFA in creative writing at UBC and is a founding member of Wet Ink Collective, which is committed to advancing opportunities for female playwrights in Canadian theatre.

The MSG Theatre Lab new play development series features work by three Asian-Canadian writers:

  • Minh Ly - Ga Ting (Richmond Cultural Centre Performance Hall, Thursday May 24 at 7:30 pm)
