Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre Presents the brink festival

VANCOUVER, BC (August 7, 2012) Three talented acts are coming together this fall to showcase their work in Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre¹s latest event, the brink festival. Following immediately on the heels of the Vancouver Fringe Festival and keeping the same format of brisk 45-minute shows, the brink festival will take place September 20 23 at Studio 1398 on Granville Island.

How did the brink fest first come about?
Joyce Lam (Artistic Director) was on her computer browsing through the acts on the Fringe Festival waitlist, and noticed a number of Asian Canadian names not lucky enough to win the Fringe entry lottery. So she contacted all of them through Facebook to see if they were interested in performing their show together with VACT¹s help. Three of them said ³hell yeah!" And brink fest was born.

Where did the name brink come from?
Contrary to popular belief, ³brink² isn¹t blink with an Asian accent. Rather, the word brink was chosen to represent the notion of being on the ³edge², both for the three acts that just missed making it in and in homage to the Fringe Festival movement itself.

David Jordan, executive director of the Vancouver Fringe Festival is an enthusiastic supporter of VACT¹s newest festival. One of the many ways he plans on supporting brink fest is to encourage fringers and brinkers to take part in both festivals.

Audience favourite David Dimapilis returns with his sketch comedy team F.O.B. (Filipinos on Board) after successfully sweeping the awards in VACT¹s 2011 Etch-Your-SketchOFF competition, and dominating the Theatre Sports Ultimate Improv Championships League on Granville Island. His team will be performing their latest creation, PANCITY, a comedic journey into the lives of Asian Canadian culture through the eyes of custodial engineers. Leroy Chin, Artistic Director of the new Seattle Asian American Theater (SAAT) comes to Vancouver to showcase a new play that he has written, Keep on Loving You. What hilarity and sparks will ensue when a troubled middle-aged man brings home his much younger lover to prove to his domineering wife that the affair he's having is real? Published fiction author, screenwriter, and UBC MFA Creative Writing alumna Loretta Seto will be bringing her play, Why Weight?, a dark comedy about one woman¹s journey into food, fat, fitness, and finally a discovery of what really feeds her. Why Weight? premiered at the 2011 Vancouver Fringe Festival to tremendous success and this is the chance to see it again if you missed it the first time.
