Yoon's Yoko Ono Project nominated for Dora

THE YOKO ONO PROJECT, by JEAN YOON, was honoured with a Dora nomination for Outstanding New Play in the 1999/2000 season. Produced by Theatre Passe Muraille and Loud Mouth Asian Babes, THE YOKO ONO PROJECT is a multimedia performance art comedy investigating the myth and art of Yoko Ono, alongside the contemporary Asian female experience in North America.

Other works nominated in the same category are:

  • Alien Creature, by Linda Griffiths
  • Belle, by Florence Gibson
  • For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again, by Michel Tremblay, translated by Linda Gaboriau
  • Music for Contortionists, by Morwyn Brebner

Griffith's Alien Creature and Tremblay's For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again, both produced in the 1999 CALENDAR year, were both recently awarded the much coveted CHALMERS AWARD for Best New Play (worth a cool $25,000).

PETER CHIN's work was also recognized with a nomination for Oustanding New Choreography for BITE in the Independent Theatre Category. This is not Peter's first nomination by any means -- in fact I THINK he won a Dora a few years back. If he didn't, he should have.

The annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards celebrating excellence in Toronto Theatre
will be presented June 26.

"Most of the news around the Dora's this year was about the Mirvishes, commercial producers," says Project author Jean Yoon, "who snared a total of 25 nominations for THE LION KING, CABARET, NOTRE DAME DO PARIS and ENIGMA VARIATIONS. I, for one, was startled to find The Yoko Ono Project up against big time musicals -- I mean, my set designer with a total budget of $1500 was up against THE LION KING. Think about it. Jesus. I mean, does that make sense to you?"
