Excerpts from The Bubblegum Killers September 199THE BUBBLEGUM KILLERS This period musical depicts a dramatic interpretation of an actual event in San Francisco in the 1930s. Developed since June 1998, the musical follows the path of one enterprising Filipino immigrant on his climb as a gang leader who defies the existing labor conditions when his cousin is mistakenly killed. First stageread by the Tongue in the Mood Players, the play went through further development during Christmas 1998 as a fully staged workshop at Il Teatro Theatre in San Francisco and through two more presentations at TheatreWorks' New Works Forum for music theatre. Numerous singers and actors congregated from the Los Angeles area to help Barroga and Musical Arranger Theo Gonzalves and Vocal Arranger Rob Robinson. This half-hour excerpt presents updated music and vocal arrangements and choreography, assisted by Jaime Martin and Jesse Abrescy. Playwright since 1981 and TheatreWorks Literary Manager since 1985, Jeannie Barroga has been produced nationwide and has five books published chronicling her work. The most recent publication was TALK-STORY ("But Still Like Air I'll Rise", Velina Hasu Houston, editor) which premiered at TheatreWorks in 1992. Other plays or dissertations appear in "Performing Asian America", Josephine Lee, editor; "Women Playwrights of Diversity", Jane T. Peterson, Suzanne Bennett, editors; "Two Plays by Jeannie Barroga", CrossCurrents, publisher; and "Unbroken Thread", Roberta Uno, editor. RITA'S RESOURCES premiered at Pan Asian Repertory Theatre, New York 1995. She served on grants panels in San Francisco, San Mateo, Oakland, and Boston. For her contribution to theatre, she received the Maverick Award from the Los Angeles Women's Festival in 1996. Since then, she presented her one-woman show A GOOD FACE at 450 Geary Studio, ACT'S Quarry Series both in San Francisco, Warehouse Repertory in Ft. Bragg, and recently at Stanford University's Asian American Theater Project in February 1999. She is a member of the Marin Theatre Lab, and the Dramatists Guild in New York. Rozmiarek, "...one of the better original scripts produced locally...with enough wisdom and humor to render it all the more understandable to the outsider...entertaining..." Julia Smith, Palo Alto Weekly, April 1992 "The stunning effect of...'time warps' stirs...an empathy for the struggle of spirit. Barroga is brilliant with words. Her dialog is sincere and intenseÖher treatment of the theme is insightful." Linda P.
