Banana Boys cast nominated for Dora Award

On June 6, the nominees for the 27th Annual Dora Awards were announced at a press release on the 68th floor in First Canadian Place. fu-GEN is thrilled to announce that all 5 actors from Banana Boys (Ins Choi, Derek Kwan, Richard Lee, David Yee and Dale Yim) were nominated as an ensemble in the ‘Outstanding Performance in a Featured Role in a Play or Musical’ category.

fu-GEN’s resident set designer Camellia Koo also received a stunning three nominations in the categories of Outstanding Set Design (Bombay Black, Kafka & Son) and Outstanding Costume Design (Bombay Black).

Banana Boys, fu-GEN Theatre Company’s inaugural production, has sold out houses three times in Toronto at Factory Theatre and last summer at the Magnetic North Theatre Festival. Sound Designer Romeo Candido was nominated for a Dora last year for Outstanding Sound Design/Composition. The play will be published in early 2007 by Playwrights Canada Press.

This year, the ensemble of Banana Boys marks many firsts in Dora history. The first time an Asian-Canadian ensemble has been nominated, and (together with Camellia Koo, Yu Su Li, Peter Chin, Dennis K. Law and Mo Xiao Min) the most number of Asian-Canadian theatre artists to receive nominations in the same year. Certainly cause to celebrate.

Also of note, Cahoots Theatre Projects’ production of Bombay Black garnered an astonishing six nominations. They are also eligible for the NOW Audience Choice Award, which is determined online at www.nowtoronto.com/dora.

fu-GEN congratulates “The Boys”, Camellia, and all their fellow nominees. The Dora Award Ceremony takes place on June 26, at the Winter Garden Theatre. Tickets available from TicketMaster, or by calling 416 872.5555. For more information, visit www.tapa.ca
