Toronto's fu-GEN announces 2013-14 Season

Nine Dragons

by Jovanni Sy

Set in 1924 in colonial Hong Kong, Nine Dragons follows Kowloon police detective Tommy Lam's investigation into the murder of a white woman in Yau Ma Tei.

This noir-inspired mystery uses the Hong Kong / Kowloon borders to investigate the cultural divide in Britain's most important colony of the time.

Three Years and Eight Months
a five play cycle by Donald Woo

An ambitious cycle of five one-act plays which concern Canadian POWs in pre-WWII Japan-occupied Hong Kong.

Donald is a former playright-in-residence with fu-GEN, we previously workshopped the first three plays of the cycle in 2011/12 along with his epic play Wong's Garden. An absolute feat of writing, we're excited to continue development of this extraordinary work.

Mama Said Knock You Out
by Ravi Jain and David Yee

A physical and theatrical exploration into the pyschology and sport of boxing.

Ravi and David will take a fists-first approach to play creation, undergoing rigorous physical training to build a visceral piece of theatre.

Fu Manchu
by Guillermo Verdecchia and David Yee

A satirical and subversive work based on the Sax Rohmer novels which first introduced the world to what would become the embodiment of the "Yellow Peril".

Expect pith helmets, supernatural and tribal folklore, cricket matches where the fate of the world hangs in the balance, giant insects and exotic missions for the good of the Empire.
