The Mulberry Street Theater (MST) is pleased to present
the premiere of "Odes, by Gottlob & Oka Dance Company, and
the premiere of "Hotel California, by SLANT, as part of MST,s
98-,99 Ear to the Ground series.
Stephanie Gottlob and Yuji Oka of Cleveland,s Gottlob &
Oka Dance Company will premiere "Odes, a twenty minute-long
series of duets and solos accompanied by the French poems of Davi Walders.
Bathed in pools of light, the dancers reflect a simple and delicate evocation
of landscape and liquid rhythms. This is the Company,s second appearance
at Mulberry Street Theater. Their first appearance in 1995 was well-received
by the community; in addition to performances, the Company conducted workshops
and lecture-demonstrations for local schools and community organizations.
SLANT, the performance trio ensemble of Rick Ebihara, Wayland
Quintero, and Perry Yung, that the New York Times described as "...three
extremely talented young Asian-American men... (1/15/98), and that the Village
Voice described as "... a performance ensemble with a retro-rock
aesthetic [that]has a way of throwing sticks of theatrical dynamite... (1/20/98),
will premiere a new work, Hotel California. Motivated by the
controversial forced eviction of dozens of elderly single Filipino and Chinese
men from their only home of several decades at the International Hotel in
San Francisco in 1977, Hotel California boldly paints a story of
bonding and camaraderie between three retro-70,s characters, and the strength
and fragility of their relationship in the face of extreme pressures and
threats from city government, real estate developers, and the police.
Using their unique SLANT performance style of live music, dramatic and satiric
scenework, choreography, and shadowplay puppetry, SLANT will present an
unforgettable premiere of a historically-inspired piece that resonates with
undeniable contemporary relevance.
This program received funding from the Lila Wallace
Theater Fund, Jerome Foundation, Axe-Houghton Foundation, the New York State
Council on the Arts, and New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
MULBERRY STREET THEATER
Mulberry Street Theater is an intimate black box performance
space created in 1988 with the mission to help promote understanding through
the arts, provide professional opportunities for artists, increase participation
in the arts, and develop future audiences. As a co-presenter of independent
artists, and presenter of four choreography series - Newsteps, Ear to
the Ground, Ear to the Ground: Moving Word, and The Ladder Series
- the theater supports the development of young artists by providing
a professional theater space in which artists of high caliber will receive
visibility from the community and press. The theater offers a homebase for
both local and visiting artists to showcase their work, and claims the distinction
of being Chinatown,s first and only professional performance space. The
theater is also host to Chen & Dancers, annual educational series for
children, provides affordable rehearsal space for modern dance artists,
and serves as a venue for a variety of community events.
