$50 MILLION FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM ESTABLISHED FOR NEW AMERICANS

A $50 million charitable trust has been established by Paul and Daisy Soros to grant fellowships for graduate study to immigrants and children of immigrants. Each fellow will receive half of graduate study tuition in the U.S. as well as a maintenance grant of $20,000 a year for up to three years.

Twenty Fellows were selected for 1998-1999, the first year of the program, from among more than 600 applicants nationwide. In subsequent years, 30 Fellows will be chosen. Applicants must be between the ages of 20 and 30; must have earned a bachelor's degree or be in the final year of undergraduate study; and must be a legal permanent resident or a naturalized U.S. citizen, or be the children of two parents who are both naturalized.
