All One Tribe Dancers Highlight Cross-Cultural Similarities July 10-12Northwest Asian American Theatre is pleased to present "All One Tribe," a dance production that explores cross-cultural similarities among native Asian, African, Native American, and Pacific Islander cultures July 10, 11, 12 at the Theatre Off Jackson (409-7th Ave S, located in Seattle's International District). Directed and choreographed by Bengie Santos, "All One Tribe" combines rhythmic, aboriginal, and tribal music with modern and contemporary dance forms. There will be a special July 10 tribute show to community leaders with special guest Bernie Whitebear. For reservations, call the box office at 206-340-1049. The production consists of twelve different dances performed by a multi-ethnic group of ten Filipino, Chinese, and African American dancers and six Taiko drummers from Northwest Taiko. "Sunrise Gathering" combines a traditional Native American harvest ritual with the Chinese ribbon dance. Another dance, "Beyond the Wall" combines traditional Japanese fan dance with traditional Filipino Muslim dance. Other dances include "Rebirth" which is a duet exploring similarities between African and African American rhythms and "The Passing" which explores common cross-cultural themes in funeral rituals. A special dance piece entitled "Homeless" will be performed by King County Executive Ron Sims, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Representative Bob Santos, King County Councilman Larry Gossett, Executive Director of El Centro Dela Raza Roberto Maestas, Executive Director for the Seattle Chinatown/International District Preservation and Development Authority Sue Taoka, and Seattle Central College Dean of Students Bea Kiyohara. She recently signed on as choreographer for NWAAT's production of West Side Story scheduled for January 26 through February 28, 1999. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Cornish Institute in 1981 and a Master's degree in Theater/Dance from Western Washington University in 1983.
