Amon Miyamoto became the first Japanese to direct a Broadway musical
when Pacific Overtures opened in New York recently.

Pacific Overtures"is a work depicting Japan in the closing days of the Tokugawa shogunate with the 1853 arrival of the "black ships" led by Commodore Matthew Perry.

Dramatizing "West meets East" events, the original Broadway show was produced in 1976 with American composers and directors. When one of them saw Miyamoto's version of the same musical in Tokyo, he recommended that it be brought to Broadway.

Directed by Miyamoto himself, some 40 Asian Americans and three Japanese will perform the musical. Well-known Japanese designer Junko Koshino fashioned the stage costumes.

Freshly Squeezed Theater, looking for Asian actors, male and female. Their website: www.freshlysqueezedtheatre.org

ACHARNIANS, a modern take on Aristophanes' play.

Rehearsals begin September 7th and are week nights 7:30p-10:30p and Saturdays from 1p-4p. Performances begin October 7 and run through the 24th. Tuesday thru Saturday evening performances and Sunday matinees at 3pm. Director is Greory Simmons and lead actress is Liat Ron, both have bios on our website. As for talent range of the actors, the girls play a variety of characters, and must be very good with physical acting for a lot of the time they are onstage and yet silent, although they do break through in chorus parts. The male actor will play a Herald, who mainly announces in loud voices at the assembly scenes, and then a drunken man (the girls play his daughters) who has a bit of a Southern drawl to him, this is the bigger part in fact. If anyone is interested, email Freshly Squeezed and get a script. The show is a modern adaptation of the play. It's part of Aristophanes' anti war trilogy which also includes Peace, and Lysistrada. Performances at the new Mint Theatre, 43rd and 8th Ave. Like all equity showcases, travel expenses will be reimbursed for Equity members.
