  • Bay Area's Bindlestiff launches workshops on film and theater!
The richness and complexity of the Filipino American experience has never been more creatively interpreted than in the field of dramatic arts. After eight years of fruitful experimentation and collaborative work with a variety of artists from the community, Bindlestiff Studio, the epicenter of Filipino American arts, continues to excite the San Francisco cultural landscape by exploring more avenues of storytelling through series of workshops on film and theater that nurture new and emerging artists. Between the months of June and October, Bindlestiff will offer new opportunities of creative risk-taking through its two main core programs; The Queu Filmmaking Workshop and Stories High Theater Workshop. Starting June 13, Bindlestiff ushers in a! new breed of independent filmmakers through the Queu. The workshop aims to provide participants with the necessary tools and skills to produce a short-form screenplay, from conceptualization to final cut, within an environment that best replicates the process and protocols of an independent production. While the curriculum will deal with the theory and practical application of filmmaking, it will also stress the notion of collaborative process, on teamwork and efficient communication. No prior film experience is necessary, but the desire to be creative around other creative folks is a MUST. You can learn more about the history of The Queue at www.jeproks.com

In July, Stories High comes into the fore with its writing, acting and directing workshops. Aimed as an incubator program since 1997, the theatrical workshops have become a strong foundation in developing short scripts into full blown plays and the honing of actors and directors in improvisational work. No prior experience necessary but an attitude of adventuresome is WELCOME.

Workshops are FREE, but donations are highly encouraged. To register and for more information, call (415) 255-0440 or through info@bindlestiffstudio.org. For The Queu, please contact anton@vertigopictures.com Or visit www.bindlestiffstudio.org.

Judges include actor and playwright Charles Busch, actor Francis Jue, costume designer Willa Kim, dancer Jadin Wong, and Chinese director and choreographer Lu Yu. Comedian Esther Goodheart hosts the benefit, which also includes a contest for the best vintage ensemble.

Ms. Chang will direct the play, which is told through Wong's memories of her life. "It gives us a little latitude," Ms. Chang explains. "It's not a slavish biography."
