  • Immediate Casting need for young East Asian girl!
    Low-budget independent feature film that's being directed by Michael Cuesta (L.I.E, Six Feet Under) and will be filmed in NY this August. The film is about several twelve year old children whose lives all change as they are forced to deal with the accidental death of one of their friends. One of the principal characters in this film is a 12 year old East Asian girl who deals with her grief and dysfunctional family by developing an intense crush and sexual attraction for an older man.

    Unfortunately, because of the nature of the role,casting has had difficulty finding an Asian girl who could take on such a dramatic role with these mature themes. Because of their difficulties finding this actress, the powers-that-be of this film are considering re-writing the script to take out the Asian family and replace it with another race.

    The script is extremely powerful and there are not nearly enough well-written principal roles for Asians in film today, The ideal actress would look about twelve, be of East Asian descent, have theatrical/film experience, and not afraid to take on this challenging role. For more info, contact A. Lee.

"When I first talked to Patty Kolb, she was so excited and determined to make it possible" said InterACT's Artistic Director Dennis Yep. "She got everyone excited about it, and thereafter it was just a matter of working out the logistics."

    InterACT would like to thank the theater community for their many offers of help, including Sacramento Theatre Company, Fairytale Town, Celebration Arts, Thistle Dew Theatre, Ed Cladio and Ray Tatar. These companies offered their spaces as an alternative, while many others called with ideas on alternative venues or spread the word that we needed help.
  • Call for scripts!
    Honolulu Theatre for Youth & Kumu Kahua Theatre Open Call for Submissions
    Since 1999, HTY has presented CHRISTMAS TALK STORY, a collection of songs and original monologues. Each story tells of a winter holiday experience from a child's point of view in Hawai'i. HTY's actors tell the stories to nearly 10,000 school children, teachers, and families in December. For the past two years, Kumu Kahua Theatre has co-produced the show.

    Sought are stories or songs that:
    * deal with Christmas or other winter holidays in Hawai'i (including Thanksgiving, New Year, Chanukah, or Kwanza);
    * are told in the first person, from the point of view of a young person (4-12) - not an adult looking back on childhood;
    * are dramatically active. The most successful stories are "monodramas", not narratives about something that happened in the past. The ideal story contains dramatic tension between storyteller and the audience; the character is not "above" the action, and, indeed, is changed by the telling of the story and make some sort of personal discovery.
    * deal with all experiences: funny, sad, touching, or bitter.
    * are between 350-700 words and are appropriate in vocabulary and content for young people

    We will select stories and songs that work together; the ultimate collection is what matters.

    HTY pays $100 for each story selected; all rights remain with the author. The collected stories will be presented as Christmas Talk Story in December 2004, at Tenney Theatre (St. Andrew's Cathedral).

    HTY will publish the scripts in a chapbook edition for schools and libraries. (25 stories from the past year have been anthologized by Bess Press.) Hawaii Public Radio will broadcast the stories. Authors receive complimentary copies of any publications and tickets to the performances. Once stories are selected, HTY will work with the authors to make them stage-appropriate.

    Deadline: June 1, 2004.

  • Search for emerging writers by SPF in NYC
    1st Annual Summer Performance Festival (SPF) for Emerging Writers

    FESTIVAL GOALS
    * To give “emerging” writers an opportunity to work on their material and their craft in a protected environment, guided by established professionals.
    * To give an opportunity for producers to see new work performed in front of an audience.

    OVERVIEW
    From July 5th to August 1st SPF will be presenting between 16 – 24 productions of plays and musicals by emerging writers. This will be done at the Theatre Row Complex on 42nd Street and 9th Avenue, in at least three 99-seat theatres and two studio spaces. All tickets will be $10 to the public and complimentary to industry professionals.

    Every show will have a two-week rehearsal schedule and one week of performances. Each show will be allotted a limited budget depending on need, so that the artists are not required to use any of their own funds. The festival will hold no rights to the shows at any time.

    INDUSTRY OUTREACH
    SPF will personally invite producers from New York, London and the Regionals to attend the festival. SPF will have a liaison responsible for all aspects of communication between the producers and the artists, including furnishing information about the shows, arranging tickets and setting up meetings upon request.

    Finally, the goal of SPF is the acknowledgment of emerging talented writers who have not had a chance to have their work recognized.

  • AATC looking for producers
    Become a producer of AATC's upcoming show, "he Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. With a minimum tax-deductible investment of $500, you can have the title of executive producer in AATC's first show by a non-APA playwright. Here's your chance to work on the creative team behind the scenes at AATC.

    Executive producers enable AATC to beat the constraints of non-profit theater economics. From your investment (which is returned to you if we break even), AATC can operate in larger houses and lengthen its production runs. Small houses and short runs guarantee a financial loss. However, executive producer investments allow the potential of break-even revenue and lots of fun for those involved!
